Terra Nova Standardized Tests

Written by

Dear Parents: Please be advised that beginning on Tuesday, May 31st , we will be administering CTBS Terra Nova standardized tests in Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies for the first through eighth grades. These tests will be conducted over a 5-day period.

Please remind your child that there is nothing to be worried about. Ample time will be given to complete the work, and the grades on the report cards will not be affected by the scores on the tests.

On the other hand, it is very important that we get an accurate idea of their skills and knowledge. Please make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and has breakfast in the morning before he/she comes to school. Thank you for your cooperation.

2nd Annual Science Fair in Review!

Written by

On Tuesday, May 17th, The Hebrew Academy conducted its second annual Science Fair. The students had a wonderful opportunity to explore the fascinating world of scientific investigation as well as enhance their research, writing, thinking, listening and speaking skills. Each student in grades 3 through 8 was responsible for writing a research report, creating a tri-board display and making a presentation to a panel of judges about their scientific findings. The students in grades Kindergarten through 2nd made a classroom project with their teacher.

All of the students worked diligently on their projects, the results of which were amazing; and the enthusiasm with which the students made their presentations was exhilarating. We were very fortunate to have three experienced people be the judges for this event – Mr. Mayer Perline (marketing and advertising professional), Mrs. Bryant (nurse) and Miss Moseson (science teacher at Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka). All three judges made comments about how impressed they were with the knowledge that was gained by the students and how well they know the scientific investigation process.

While all of the students are winners, the following students won specific awards:

First Place: Jonathan Rubin – What is infrared light?

Second Place: Levi Alpert & Gavi Goldstein – Improving efficiency of solar panels

Third Place: Dan Alpert & David Mendelovits – Dry ice

Runners Up:

  • Alex Schwartz – Which soda cleans tarnished pennies the best?
  • Yael Scholle – My toothpaste "egg"speriment
  • Aviel Ratson – Can an egg fit through a narrow bottle neck?
  • Ribbon Awards: 2nd Grade (Research Award) – How many drops of water can fit on a penny?

  • Yehuda Cohen (Save the Earth Award) – Which garbage bag holds more?
  • Dina Landau (Behavioral & Social Science Award) – Which optical illusion is hardest to detect?
  • Kayla Shatkin (Chemistry Award) – Chemical reactions between acids and bases

  • Rafi Feig & Sruly Kotlarsky (Medicine & Health Award) – How does an antacid help your pH level?
